Shuffle for MAC

Free, open-source file manager for Mac with dual panes, tabs, a fast command palette, terminal mode and deep theming. A GPU-rendered Finder alternative.

Shuffle Overview

Shuffle is a small, native file manager for macOS and an alternative to Finder. It is GPU rendered with Metal and uses fully virtualized lists, so its developer says a folder with 100,000 items scrolls as smoothly as one with 10. It is written in Rust with GPUI, the interface toolkit behind the Zed editor, and it does not use Electron.

The window can split into two side-by-side panes, each with its own tabs, history and filter. A command palette searches your home folder with typo tolerance, and an optional terminal mode lets you move through folders with shell-style commands. Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive and iCloud show up automatically next to mounted volumes. Shuffle is made by Jaime Guzman and released under the MIT license. It needs macOS 12 or later and the download is universal for Apple Silicon and Intel. The project describes itself as early but usable and under active development. Terminal, Preview and Information are optional and off by default; you turn them on in Settings > General.

Key Features

Shuffle gives the Mac file browser more tools for people who manage a lot of files.

  • Dual panes: drag a tab to the window edge to split it, then resize with the divider.
  • Tabs: open them with Cmd+T, drag to reorder, and move them between panes.
  • Command palette: Cmd+P fuzzy-searches your home folder with typo tolerance.
  • Terminal mode: an optional command bar where cd navigates and Tab completes paths.
  • Preview and information: single-click a file for QuickLook and a details inspector.
  • In-place filter: press / to narrow the current folder as you type.
  • Cloud and servers: cloud folders, mounted volumes and a Connect to Server dialog.
  • Deep theming: presets such as Catppuccin, Dracula, Nord and Tokyo Night, plus per-color changes.

What’s New in Version 0.5.2

Shuffle 0.5.2 is a safety release for file operations.

  • Compressing a selection with a file named like a zip option, such as -m, no longer deletes originals.
  • A symlink pointing inside the folder being copied is now caught by the "can't copy into itself" check.
  • Undo checks every file in a copy before trashing it, so a copy you have edited is kept.
  • If a move between drives could not remove some originals, Shuffle tells you and Undo reverses only what moved.
  • Read-only folders can be moved, renamed and copied, and keep their read-only setting, as in Finder.
  • Undo uses less memory for large folder copies.
